Sorry for the delay in my blog writing. I had to go through the motions of the holiday season. I went to Hawaii to visit my dad. Kind of a splurge trip. Every person with Multiple Sclerosis or any disability for that reason should visit Honolulu. Waikiki Beach is full of people on wheelchairs and scooters and canes and walkers. The roads are fully accessible, flat with curb cuts on each corner. Plus, the weather is to die for. In the winter especially. I’ve heard that the summer gets a little bit hot, but the winter was absolutely perfect. Not to mention that the Hawaii community emphasizes the importance of physical fitness – people carry their surfboards, skateboards, and everything in between with them often. For a person with a disability, rather than play catch up with the socialized world of 9-5 job, the life in Hawaii is far more suited for casualness.
Now that it is winter in New York, I’ve come to start thinking about how to maintain my physical body in these harsh weather conditions. Even a person with a fully functioning and able body would not want to be in this weather, I still make it a point to go to the gym at least every other day.
That’s right I said it. So I have to stick to it.
The last time that I was in warm weather doing physical fitness was in India, when I worked with a yoga master to properly learn how to stretch myself.
Here is a fun little video on my experiences working with the yoga master at this time:

thnx for your blog entry! hmmm in response to your question… so even though its been a minute– I’m a big fan of swimming pools and water exercise. pools are great for stretching, building muscle, cardio etc. water is supportive and resistant at the same time. And something bout playing in a pool can trick me into feeling like its not winter.
great video! Yoga. Love of my life.
Yaye for YOGA!!! Yoga is how I stay in check during the nasty winter… every morning in my livingroom!!!!
Hey Jason,
My favourite quote from a yoga teacher: “Balance is not a place, it is a dialogue”.
Love Ronya
Hi Jason,
It’s been a while since I left a comment. Winter exercise, since you’re going to the gym, I second the comment above, swimming is great. You can use the pool weights and work the muscles with less stress. But, if the weather’s bad, I have some hand weights and can do some stretching and strengthening at home. You can use the back of a chair to put your leg up and stretch those muscles, and, of course, keep doing yoga.
